Madekwe was raised by an ethnically mixed family. Her mother is English and her father is Nigerian. Her family was in the southern part of London Council Estate, and then went to The Brit School aged 14. It was the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art is where she earned an acting BA. She was on stage in numerous productions during her time at school including the role of King Henry V, as Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.

Madekwe made her US debut on the drama The Beautiful Life, which only aired two episodes in the US on The CW before being cancelled. Ashley Leggat, a twice Gemini nominated actress, was raised in a huge family from Hamilton, Ontario. She was raised by the parents Roy and Patty together with four brothers who were older than them: Brett, Todd and Bram twins, Rob, and Brett. Ashley's brothers, who were all very active, took part in hockey during the winter and baseball during the summers, meaning that she grew up playing in arenas and baseball parks. Ashley was unable to walk, but was able to dance. As a result, as she grew older, she discovered Baby Ballet. This was the beginning of Ashley's love for dancing. When she was in the high school she attended, Ashley danced competitively in the highest divisions of tap, jazz, ballet, pointe, acrobatics, musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop. Top soloists at big competitions, such as International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance which were all given to Ashley.
